The Merciful Knight

"The Mercyful Knight" (116x89 cm) oil/canvas - Almeriane 2010

When I first saw the Burne-Jones´ watercolor of the "Mercyful Knight", I was very impressed! This is such a beautiful, mystical & full of feelings painting!!! It would appear it was one of the painter´s favourite artwork. No wonder...

The subject is taken from the life of the Florentine knight St John Gualberto, founder of the Valombrosan Order in 1039., who was miraculously embraced by a wooden figure of Christ while praying at a wayside shrine after forgiving the murder of his kinsman.

Here is my interpretation! This is an oil painting on canvas, 116 x 89 cm size.

Thisbe

"Thisbe" (100x65 cm) - oil - Almeriane 2009

Here is my last oil painting on canvas, concerning the love story of Thisbe & Pyramus.
This story is a part of the Roman mythology.
"Thisbe and Pyramus were two lovers but forbidden by their parents to see each others. As their houses were connected, through a crack in one of the walls, they wisper their love for each other.
One day, they arrange to meet under a mulberry tree.
Thisbe arrives first, but upon seeing a lioness with a mouth bloody from a recent kill, she flees, leaving behind her veil. The lioness mutilates it. When Pyramus arrives, he is horrified at the sight o Thisbe´s veil, assuming that a fierce beast had killed her. Pyramus kills himself, violently thrusting a sword into his groin, and in turn splashing blood on the white mulberry leaves. Pyramus' blood stains the white mulberry fruits, turning them dark. Thisbe returns, eager to tell Pyramus what had happened to her, but she finds Pyramus' dead body under the shade of the mulberry tree. Thisbe, after a brief period of mourning, stabs herself with the same sword. In the end, the gods listen to Thisbe's lament, and forever change the color of the mulberry fruits into the stained color to honor the forbidden love." (Ref. Wikipedia)
I already have an idea for him but I have to do some sketches, as I don´t know yet his features, for he is one of my new models.
Thisbe is my little cousin Barbara.

Pictures Session w/ Pre-Raphaelite poses

One of the good parts of beginning a collection is that I have to take photos and I meet a lot of people. Lately, I´m making many pictures sessions, with people, who are not professional model, but they are making a really good job!

Last Sunday, I asked 2 sisters and her brother to come over. They were very excited and a little bit shy, because they thought that it was a waste of time to picture them as they were convinced that they weren´t good posing. Nevertheless, they are so fond of my artworks and my Art Nouveau Andaluz style, that they aggreed and told me that it would be a privilege to be in one of my paintings.

They came in the morning, around 11. Where I live, it´s been almost one year without raining, and this is just the day of my pictures session that the rain decided to arrive. It was a cloudy and windy day, but we didn´t pay attention!

To make them comfortable, for the first photos, they posed with coats for the girls: Gema and Eli and a cape for him (actually, Jose kept it during the all session). I let them do what ever they wanted to do, to get used to the camara. Although, the view to the Mediterrannean see, helps a lot to be less tense.

Then, we came back home and I dressed-up the girls. As I don´t have any medieval dress, I used what I had: long skirts, mantones, jewels, … Afterwards, in my paintings, I design the dresses.

I asked them to do some poses I would need for my paintings, and they had a lot of fun with that because it was like acting!

I tried to use a little bit of their personalities: Gema is the shyest one and she is more quiet, Jose is an open mind and a full of joy guy and Eli, is the eldest one, the protective sister and curious of everything.

They are all three sweet, romantic, sensitive and big-hearted persons, so that will be very nice for me to portrait them and I really enjoy having them as my new models, for my Pre-Raphaelite Tribute Series. I´m pretty sure, I will ask them again to come back for more photos!!!

Here are some of the pictures. Don´t be shy to make some comments!!!

New Collection: Pre-Raphaelites Tribute

I made this blog to be abble to keep an history of my new art collection: a tribute to the Pre-Raphaelites!

I´m a French-Spanish painter and thanks to them, 11 years ago, I found my own style.
Being a self-taught painter, I first copy the Art Masters and then, found my own path.
I love their romantic touch, their realism, the dreamy atmosphere that their beautiful paintings transmit to the spectators. They really gave sense to the definition of the word "ART".

Like them, I think that you have to be able to dream looking at an artwork and that you have to seduce the spectators with beauty! So, It´s what I´m trying to do...
My new oil paintings serie, is my way to thank them! I don´t pretend to copy them, I just want to make an interpretation of some of their masterpieces, in my own style meaning my spanish and Art-Nouveau touch.
So, in this blog, I will show my drawings studies, photos I take of my models and, of course, the oil paintings on canvas.

Hope, you´ll enjoy my new collection, and I would apreciate to have some comments!
